<image:title>Course Reviews & Posts - Country Club of Virginia, Westhampton Course - The first hole at Westhampton is a great way to ease into the golf course. Playing around 350 yards from from the opening tee, the golfer can hit anything from a long iron to driver to start their round. The first fairway is pretty open. With enough distance on your drive you will get some added carry from a hill on the left side of the hole that will leave you playing your approach shot to a slightly a uphill two tier green. A short playable par four is always a nice way to start a round on any golf course.</image:title>

<image:title>Course Reviews & Posts - Country Club of Virginia, Westhampton Course - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>After a short par three second, you reach one of the more challenging holes on the course. Driver is always going to be the play off the tee here as you are dealt a 430 yard hole with lots to take in. The tee shot requires carry over a large ravine to a fairway that moves slightly from right to left. A miss off the tee left can likely lead to out of bounds and a miss right can lead to a really difficult shot off a large hill. Even with a good drive you may still be left with a blind approach shot. Any form of a missed fairway will lead to a difficult approach shot; even a drive that is not well centered can make the approach tricky. After cresting the hill the approach here plays slightly downhill to a nice sized green. Don’t miss right here as many approach shots funnel down into an out of bounds area. Consider hitting a green in regulation on this hole a win.</image:caption>

<image:title>Course Reviews & Posts - Country Club of Virginia, Westhampton Course</image:title>
<image:caption>The par four thirteenth is my favorite hole design on the course. The hole does not play long at 351 yards but requires a good bit of strategy. The hole is as straight away as they come with large trees guarding either side of the fairway. The fairway has a few rolling hills built into it, with a good drive you can get a nice roll off your tee shot to add in some extra yardage. The hole gets complex when it comes to strategy on the approach shot. The good news is the green is =one of the largest on the course, the bad news it is probably the most difficult. The large size is overshadowed by two significant size tiers. With a back pin placement this pin can become a true bear and walking away with a three put can be common place. Additionally there are three of four sides of the green covered by sand traps. This par four at the Westhampton course is no walk in the park.</image:caption>

<image:title>Course Reviews & Posts - Country Club of Virginia, Westhampton Course</image:title>
<image:caption>The final par three on the course is a straight forward hole playing just under 170 yards from the tees. From the tee boxes, the hole slopes down and then back up to a slightly elevated green. Two bunkers guard the front sides of the green. With the elevated green there is slope off most sides of the green so if you do miss this green you are looking at a uphill pitch or a sand shot. Again, this is a straightforward par three but I usually wind up with a bogey on this hole for whatever reason.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The 2024 Majors hold a special place for me in my heart, not to mention there were some incredible finishes, specifically the US Open at Pinehurst. I had the fortunate opportunity to attend Friday round of The Masters; the first and of course best Major of the year. It was extra special because I got to go with my wife, who was a first time Patron, along with my Dad and Father In Law. I also attended the Thursday round of The PGA Championship at Valhalla. Next up is try to get to a U.S. Open or a Ryder Cup.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I also have to continue to learn to trust my swing on the course; this applies to my full swing as well as chipping and pitching. I am often guilty of changing swing thoughts mid round (huge no no) and losing confidence in my swing if things are not going well over the course of the round. I will even change swing thoughts during a practice session and then try and take that to the next round. Stick with the swing thought and trust my swing. Limit the thinking. I have seen glimpses of what my swing can be when I trust it and let the swing changes I have made and worked so hard on over the years take effect. I do not have a natural golf talent so I have to work continuously at this sport to try and see pockets of success.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The par five 8th provides a example of the wide fairways on Fully Cry as well as a sweeping view of the Keswick Hall property Tee times are open to members of Fully Cry and guests of the resort; the course is considered private. On the nice winter day I was fortunate to have, most of the groups on the course were members rather than resort guests. I imagine during the peak spring and summer months Keswick holds a pretty full tee sheet. They do not advertise much at all regarding greens fees for resort guests. I believe I paid somewhere just north of $200 for my round which in my mind was well worth the cost of admission. The course is a traditional par 72 with two par threes and fives on both the front and back. Multiple sets of tees allow for the best experience for each skill set of golfer with a maximum tee length and slope raiting of 7,134/138. While Full Cry does not play nearly as hard as Dye classics like Whistling Straits or TPC Sawgrass, it was just what the doctor drew up for me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Picture perfect, the short par 3 11th hole If there is a postcard worthy hole at Heritage Hill, it is the 11th hole. Built into the heart of the Kentucky woods, this par 3 plays slightly downhill to a large two-tier green. Even though it is ranked the second easiest hole on the course, hitting the green is no guaranteed par. One of the unique features of this hole is several large outcroppings of rocks. I am sure many of golf balls have hit directly on the large cropping to the right of the hole. Trouble comes into play with shots that are left short of the green with a small creek bed and large trap encircling the front half of the green. Enjoy the view here before another special one on the final hole of the course.</image:caption>

<image:title>Course Reviews & Posts - Louisville Slugging: Heritage Hill - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The best tee shot on the course comes on the 18th hole The finishing hole at Heritage Hill was the best hole on the course, in my opinion. It makes for a great finishing hole (coming soon: a book about great finishing holes in golf, probably already written). The tee shot is off a large 80 plus foot (ish) slope to another pretty open fairway, easily the largest elevation change on the course. A miss right can lead to a longer approach shot out of the rough on what should play as a relatively short par 4 (say the guy who missed the fairway to the right). A large lake lines the left side off the hole and should only come in play off the tee with a big miss or a big hitter looking to cut out most of the fairway. It does come into play on the final approach shot at Heritage Hil to another large green. A great finishing hole to a overall solid Louisville course. In Summary Despite the small baseline of courses I have played in Louisville, I would say Heritage Hill is one worth checking out if you are on a golfing exhibition in the area. The blend of holes, topography, elevation changes, and standout signature holes make for a nice 18 hole journey. Have yourself a nice post round bourbon ready and get on out to Heritage Hill.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Donald Ross introduces the golfer to the beauty of Highlands Country Club from the first tee box No 6: 450 Yards, Par 5 The sixth hole is the first par five of the course and play a modest 450 yards from the Donald Ross tees. The play here off the tee is to the left side of the fairway laying up short of the creek. Big hitters can go for the green here in two shots. With the layup, upon clearing the creek, you should be left with a short iron in. The green is a receptive one that slops from back to front. The hole is not long and is fairly open so the golfer can take advantage of a early scoring opportunity here on the front nine.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The sixth hole is a early scoring opportunity, stay clear of the creek crossing the hole off the tee box No 8: 373 Yards, Par 4 The eighth hole was one of my favorite holes on the front nine. The fairway is straight and then takes a slight turn to the right and carries down a hill. There are a few options of the tee here. Play to the left side of the hole to set up your approach shot or take an aggressive line to the right side to try and get some carry and take a chunk of yards of your approach shot. From the left side of the fairway your approach shot should be within 150 yards or in and plays to a large green.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of my favorite holes on the front nine was the par four 8th No 16: 142 Yards, Par 3 The sixteenth is the start of a great three hole finishing stretch at Highlands Country Club. I think sixteen is one of the prettiest and most aesthetically pleasing golf holes on the course. This par three doesn't play long at just over 140 yards but it can make for a difficult par if you miss the putting surface. Anything short of the front green will likely roll down a front slope and play to a uphill put or chip shot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Course Reviews & Posts - Highlands County Club - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>16 is a short par three but can play deceivingly difficulty with a inaccurate tee short No 17: 478 Yards, Par 5 The 17th is the last par 5 on the course and is sandwiched between two par threes. Standing on this tee box was one of my favorite moments of the round and was just a perfect place to take in the beauty of the course. The seventeenth plays straight away and similar to other par fives is not a long hole. A good drive for a long hitter and you have a good opportunity to go for the green in two here. The putting surface is another favorable size here and sets up for a fun finishing hole.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The majestic par 5 17th at Highlands Country Club is a hole to take in No 18, 165 Yards, Par 3 The finishing hole is a fun one in unique in that it is a par three. I kind of like a par three finish just because you really do not see it that often and is a non traditional finishing hole. Playing 165 yards, the tee shot requires carry over water. The tee box is slightly elevated and the hole plays ever so slightly down hill. If you clear the water the hole plays pretty straight forward from there and there is not to much additional trouble to note. I had one of my better shots of the day here and stuck it within a few feet and was able to make my birdie.</image:caption>
